Time on the Clock
How Long Does the Real Estate Exam Take?
State real estate exams range from 1.5 hours (New York) to 5 hours (Arizona), with most states landing between 3 and 4 hours. Question counts run from 75 to nearly 200 — but the time-per-question allotment is roughly the same in most states (about 90 seconds).
The clock matters less than your pacing strategy. Candidates who run out of time usually let one tough question burn five minutes; candidates who finish early use a flag-and-move discipline.

What's NOT in the Time Limit
Check-in time. Plan to arrive 30 minutes early. The testing center handles ID verification, biometric (palm vein) scan, locker assignment, and a brief computer tutorial before your exam clock starts.
Total time at the testing center, from arrival to departure, is typically 4 to 5 hours for most state exams.
The Pacing Strategy That Actually Works
Read each question once. If you can answer in under a minute, do it. If you can't, eliminate obviously wrong answers, take your best guess, FLAG the question, and move on.
Glance at the on-screen timer after every 25 questions. If you're behind pace, increase speed. If you're ahead, double-check your work before finalizing.
Use roughly 70% of your time on the first pass through all questions, 20% on flagged questions, and the final 10% to verify high-value answers — especially math problems and state-specific items where second-guessing tends to be wrong.
Build Exam-Day Stamina With Timed Practice
Sitting through 90+ minutes of timed questions in practice is the only way to know if your stamina holds up. Start with the diagnostic, then graduate to full-length practice tests.

Time Limit FAQ
Can I take breaks during the exam?
Most testing centers allow restroom breaks, but the exam clock keeps running. Plan to use breaks sparingly — at most one short break in a 3+ hour exam.
What happens if I run out of time?
Whatever you've answered is scored. Unanswered questions count as wrong. If you're approaching time, fill in best guesses on remaining questions rather than leaving them blank.
Can I finish early?
Yes. Most candidates finish in 60 to 80% of the allowed time. You can submit when you're done — there's no penalty for finishing early.
