Course Format
Online vs In-Person Real Estate Pre-Licensing Courses
Most states approve both online (self-paced or live-virtual) and in-person real estate pre-licensing courses. Both teach the same state-mandated content. The right format depends on your learning style, schedule, and how disciplined you are with self-paced material.
Online vs In-Person
Online (Self-Paced)
Most flexible. Complete on your schedule. Typically cheaper ($200–$500). Requires self-discipline. Best for self-motivated learners who can finish independently.
Online (Live Virtual)
Scheduled live classes via Zoom/webinar. Real-time instructor interaction. Typically $400–$700. Good middle ground between in-person and self-paced.
In-Person
Traditional classroom. Most expensive ($500–$900). Best for learners who need scheduled accountability and direct instructor interaction. Less common today.
Same Content, Different Delivery
Every approved pre-licensing course covers the same state-mandated content regardless of format. The state real estate commission approves the curriculum; the school chooses how to deliver it.
Course quality varies more by school than by format. A well-designed self-paced course can be more effective than a lackluster live class.
How to Choose
Self-disciplined and time-flexible? → Self-paced online (cheapest, fastest possible)
Want some structure but need flexibility? → Live-virtual online
Need scheduled accountability and prefer in-person? → In-person classroom
Best learner outcomes correlate more with effort than format — pick what you'll actually finish
Start Practicing After (or During) Your Course
Pre-licensing courses teach the content. Practice tests prepare you for the EXAM. Use both.
