License Renewal
Real Estate Continuing Education Requirements by State
Every state requires licensed real estate agents to complete continuing education (CE) before renewing their license. The number of hours, required topics, and renewal cycle vary significantly — here's what you need to know.
How Continuing Education Works
Continuing education maintains and updates your knowledge of current real estate law, ethics, and practices. Most states require 14–45 hours of CE per renewal cycle, which typically runs 2–4 years.
Within the total CE requirement, most states mandate specific topic hours: a fair housing module, an ethics course, and state law updates are nearly universal requirements. Some states also require core law and agency modules.
CE can typically be completed online through state-approved providers. Many agents complete their entire CE requirement online in a few days, often bundled together in a renewal package from their original pre-licensing school.
Common CE Structures
14 Hours / 2-Year Cycle
Common structure: 3 hours of mandatory topics + 11 hours of elective CE. Applies to several mid-size states.
22.5 Hours / 2-Year Cycle
New York's requirement. Includes mandatory fair housing, agency, and ethics modules within the 22.5 hours.
45 Hours / 4-Year Cycle
Florida's structure: 45 hours first renewal, then 14 hours per subsequent cycle. First renewal includes post-licensing requirements.
30 Hours / 3-Year Cycle
Pennsylvania and some other states use a 3-year cycle with approximately 30 hours of CE.

Continuing Education FAQ
What happens if I don't complete CE by my renewal deadline?
Your license lapses. A lapsed license means you cannot legally practice real estate. Most states allow reinstatement with late fees and completion of outstanding CE, but some require re-examination after extended lapses.
Can I carry over CE hours to the next cycle?
Most states do not allow carryover. CE hours are specific to the current renewal cycle. Completing extra hours doesn't reduce your next cycle's requirement.
Do I need CE if I have a broker's license?
Yes. Brokers have separate CE requirements that are typically equal to or higher than salesperson requirements. Some states require additional broker-specific CE topics.
Is the NAR Code of Ethics course accepted as CE?
Yes, in most states. NAR members take the Code of Ethics training every three years, and most state commissions accept it to fulfill the ethics component of CE requirements.
