Real Estate Exam Day: What to Expect
Most candidates know what topics are on the exam. Far fewer know what happens when they walk into the testing center. The check-in process, the testing environment, and the exam interface are all things you can prepare for in advance — and they affect your score.
This guide walks through everything that happens from the morning of your exam to the moment you see your result.
Before You Leave Home
Prepare everything the night before, not the morning of. Confirm your appointment time and testing center address. Double-check that your primary ID name matches exactly what you registered with — a name mismatch can result in being turned away with no refund.
Eat a real meal before you go. Testing centers do not allow food or drinks inside. The exam typically runs 2.5–3.5 hours and you cannot leave to eat — hunger is a genuine focus problem at the 2-hour mark.
Arrive 20–30 minutes early. Pearson VUE and PSI both recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your appointment. Late arrivals may be turned away and forfeit the exam fee. Account for traffic and parking — find the exact building, not just the street address.
What to Bring on Exam Day
Bring these items. Nothing else is allowed in the testing room.
Primary photo ID: driver's license, passport, or state-issued ID — name must exactly match your registration
Secondary ID with your name and signature: credit card, debit card, or student ID
Exam appointment confirmation (number or printout — have it accessible on your phone before you go in)
Comfortable, layered clothing — testing centers are frequently cold
Glasses or contacts if you need them — nothing else
What You Cannot Bring Into the Testing Room
These items must be left in your car or in a locker — not at your seat.
Phone and smartwatch (must be off and stored — phones in pockets are grounds for exam cancellation)
Notes, textbooks, flashcards, or any printed study material
Personal calculators (an on-screen calculator is provided by the testing software)
Food and drinks
Bags, backpacks, and purses
Hats or hoods (some centers require their removal at check-in)
The Check-In Process
At Pearson VUE locations: you check in at the front desk, present both IDs, and the administrator photographs you and scans your palm vein (a biometric check used to prevent fraud). You then turn out your pockets, sign in, and are escorted to your workstation. The process takes about 5–10 minutes.
At PSI locations: the process is similar — photo ID verification, digital signature, and photograph. Some PSI locations use fingerprint scanning instead of palm vein. You are given scratch paper and a pencil before being seated.
Both testing centers use individual cubicles or divided workstations. You will not see other candidates' screens. The testing room is quiet — proctors monitor via camera and may be present in the room.
The Exam Interface and What to Expect
The exam is entirely on screen — all multiple choice, four options per question. You can flag questions to review later. Use this feature: if a question is taking too long, flag it and move on rather than letting it consume several minutes.
You will see a question count and timer in the corner. Most states give between 90 seconds and 2 minutes per question on average. Florida gives 2.1 minutes per question (210 minutes for 100 questions). California gives 1.4 minutes per question (210 minutes for 150 questions) — the tightest timing of any major state exam.
The exam typically has two sections: national and state. Some testing software shows them as separate sections with separate timers. If you finish the national portion early, that extra time does not carry over to the state portion — so pace yourself on each section.
Exam Day Timing by State
Florida
100 questions, 210 minutes (3.5 hours). Single combined exam. Passing score: 75% (75/100). Results displayed on screen immediately.
California
150 questions, 210 minutes (3.5 hours). This is the fastest-paced major state exam — about 84 seconds per question. Passing: 70% (105/150). Results immediate.
Texas
125 questions (85 national + 40 state), 240 minutes (4 hours). Passing: 70% on each portion independently. Results immediate at Pearson VUE.
New York
75 questions, 90 minutes. One of the shorter state exams. Passing: 70% (53/75). Results immediate at PSI locations.
Georgia
152 questions (100 national + 52 state), approximately 4 hours. Passing: 75% on each section. Results displayed on screen.
North Carolina
120 questions (80 national + 40 state), 240 minutes (4 hours). Passing: 75% on each section. Results printed at testing center.
Pacing Strategy During the Exam
The single biggest exam-day mistake is spending too long on hard questions at the start and then rushing through easier questions at the end. Move through the exam at a steady pace — answer what you know confidently, flag anything uncertain, and return to flagged questions at the end.
Data from standardized testing research consistently shows that your first-instinct answer is more often correct than your changed answer — unless you have a specific, factual reason to change. Do not second-guess yourself based on anxiety.
For math questions: write the numbers down on your scratch paper before touching the calculator. Identifying the formula (commission, cap rate, LTV, proration) is the hardest part — once you have it written, the calculation is straightforward.
Getting Your Results
At Pearson VUE and most PSI locations, your preliminary pass/fail result appears on screen immediately after you submit the exam. You are then escorted to the front desk where the administrator prints your official score report.
Your score report shows your score by content area, not just a pass/fail. Keep this report — if you passed, it is part of your licensing paperwork. If you failed, the content-area breakdown tells you exactly what to study for your retake.
After passing, you will apply for your license through your state real estate commission. This typically involves submitting your score report, completing a background check, finding a sponsoring broker, and paying a license application fee. Processing time varies from a few days to several weeks depending on the state.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I arrive late to the exam?
Testing centers typically have a grace period of 5–15 minutes. Beyond that, you are turned away and your exam fee is forfeited. You then need to reschedule and pay again. Pearson VUE and PSI both enforce this strictly — arriving 15–20 minutes early is the only safe approach.
Can I use the bathroom during the exam?
Yes, but the clock keeps running. You must leave your workstation and check out with a proctor. At most centers, you can take a bathroom break but you cannot access your phone or any materials during the break. Use the time before your exam for bathroom breaks.
What if I forget my ID?
You will be turned away. Both Pearson VUE and PSI require two forms of valid ID. There are no exceptions. Your exam appointment is forfeited if you cannot present valid identification. Call the testing center immediately if you are unsure which IDs are accepted.
Will the testing center provide scratch paper?
Yes. Pearson VUE and PSI both provide paper and pencils at your workstation. You cannot bring your own. The proctor collects all scratch paper when you finish — you cannot take it with you.
What if there is a technical problem during the exam?
Raise your hand and alert the proctor immediately. Do not attempt to fix anything yourself. The proctor will contact technical support. Most testing centers have policies to restore your exam time if there is a verified technical issue on their end.
