Test Day Preparation
Real Estate Exam Day Tips: What to Do Before, During & After
Walking into the testing center prepared — not just with knowledge, but with logistics — can mean the difference between a confident pass and an avoidable fail. Here's everything to know about exam day.
What to Bring to the Testing Center
Two valid, government-issued photo IDs (driver's license + passport or credit card with signature)
Your exam confirmation number or authorization to test letter
An approved calculator if your state allows one (check your state PSI/Pearson VUE rules)
Nothing else — no phones, notes, bags, or food past the check-in desk
The Day-Before Routine
Do a light review session the evening before — no more than 60–90 minutes. Focus on formulas, vocabulary, and any topics you've been shaky on. Then stop. Your brain needs consolidation time, not more input.
Confirm the testing center address, parking, and check-in time. Most Pearson VUE and PSI centers require you to arrive 30 minutes early. Being late can mean forfeiting your exam fee.
Get a full night's sleep. Fatigue impairs recall more than almost anything else. Candidates who report poor sleep the night before score measurably lower, even with strong preparation.
Pacing and Strategy During the Exam
The national portion typically has 80–100 questions with a 150-minute time limit — about 90 seconds per question. Don't spend more than two minutes on any single question. Flag it, move on, and return at the end.
Read every answer choice before selecting one. Real estate exam questions often have two attractive answers; the correct one is usually more specific, legally precise, or complete.
When in doubt, eliminate clearly wrong answers first. Even reducing four choices to two doubles your statistical odds if you have to guess.
Trust your first instinct on recall questions. Research shows that changing answers on recall-based tests usually hurts scores. Only change an answer if you remember a specific fact that clearly invalidates your first choice.
Exam Day FAQ
What happens if I arrive late?
Most testing centers will not admit you after check-in closes (typically 30 minutes before start). You'll forfeit your exam fee and need to reschedule. Always arrive early.
Can I leave the testing room during the exam?
Generally no. PSI and Pearson VUE both treat any break as ending your exam session. A few states allow supervised restroom breaks — check your state's specific rules.
When do I find out if I passed?
Most PSI and Pearson VUE exams show a pass/fail result immediately on screen after you finish. A printed score report is usually provided before you leave.
What if I fail one portion but pass the other?
Most states allow you to retake only the failed portion within a window (typically 1 year). You won't need to repeat the portion you passed.
