Illinois Real Estate License Requirements
Before you can practice real estate in Illinois, you must satisfy a series of requirements set by the Illinois real estate commission. These include completing a state-approved pre-license education program, passing the Illinois real estate exam, submitting a license application, and clearing a background check.
This page covers every requirement you need to meet to obtain a Illinois real estate salesperson license — including education hours, exam structure, application steps, and what to expect at renewal.
What Illinois requires, and what it does not
Illinois requires 75 hours of approved pre-licensing education and a passing result on the state licensing exam. Licences then renew on roughly a 2-year cycle.
There is no degree requirement, and prior industry experience is not a prerequisite. The gate is education hours and an exam, which is why the barrier to entry is low and the attrition rate afterwards is high.
The requirements people miss
Approved provider status — hours from an unapproved course may not count, and that is discovered at application.
A criminal history review, which is a case-by-case determination rather than an automatic bar.
Errors and omissions coverage, which some states require before you may practise.
Broker affiliation, without which a passed exam does not let you work.
Before you enrol in a course
Check the provider is approved in Illinois specifically. Approval is state-by-state, and a national course that satisfies one state may not satisfy another.
Confirm this against the Illinois licensing authority before acting on it. Requirements move by legislation and administrative rule, and every prep site — including this one — is a secondary source that can go stale between updates.
